About Us

BioFluid Technology was founded in 2010 to commercialize the research and development efforts of Dr. Reuben Kron, an emeritus professor at the University of Pennsylvania.  Dr. Kron has been supported by more than $2 million of NIH and other funding, studying the physical properties and flow characteristics of biological fluids.

Key elements of BioFluid's business model:

  • Generate product concept

  • Design and develop product

  • Protect intellectual property

  • Demonstrate proof of principle

  • Produce initial prototype

  • Human clinical trials

  • Secure FDA approval

  • Establish manufacturing

Applying cutting edge technologies, our products are designed to be user friendly with intuitive controls and interfaces that do not require an advanced level of technical skill.

The company has used minimal private capital, funding its programs principally with NIH sponsored SBIR grants.  BioFluid and its wholly owned subsidiaries have been awarded a total of five SBIR grants, including two phase II grants, for a total of nearly $1.8 million.

Our Team

Reuben E. Kron, M.D. - President and Founder

Dr. Reuben E. Kron is the founder and President of Biofluid Technology, Inc., where he leads the development of novel diagnostic and analytical technologies focused on the characterization of whole-blood behavior and its physiological implications. He serves as the scientific and engineering lead for the Biofluid Inflammometer™ platform, guiding its design, development, and translational strategy.

Dr. Kron is an emeritus professor at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and has authored over 85 peer-reviewed publications. He holds 12 U.S. and international patents spanning medical devices and biofluid measurement technologies. His work is centered on translating fundamental physiologic and biophysical principles into practical systems capable of generating clinically meaningful measurements.

At Biofluid Technology, Dr. Kron directs the company’s research and development efforts, with a focus on advancing device-driven measurement systems toward real-world clinical and translational applications.

Edwin J. Thomas - CEO and Founder

Mr. Thomas has 30 years business experience, including more than 20 years in executive management positions (CFO or CEO), in both public and private companies, primarily in development stage health care technology and biotechnology.

Mr. Thomas studied biochemistry and economics at the University of Pennsylvania (Bachelor of Science), and received his Masters in Business Administration from The Wharton School.

Stephen Kron, M.D. - Chief Scientific Officer

Dr. Kron is a Professor at the University of Chicago and is a physician and bioengineer. He has founded several biotech companies and contributes to the development of BioFluid products.

Rona Cohen - Vice President

Ms. Cohen provides consulting services to companies where technology plays a key role in the definition of their business. As part of her portfolio, she helped to define new products and set up business processes for pharmaceutical, chemical, and medical device companies.

Ms. Cohen has an MBA from Drexel University and a BA in Chemistry from the University of Pennsylvania.

Larry Engle - Senior Engineer

Mr. Engle has over 25 years of experience in the medical device industry.  He has participated in successful startups that have brought cutting-edge medical devices to market.  His expertise is in medical device design and manufacture, product compliance, quality management systems, and regulatory affairs. Mr. Engle holds two US patents.
